My Favourite Tech Gadget
Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 4:22 PM When all the hype about the Apple iPhone came up I thought to myself, "Great...yet another toy that will be all hype and no substance. I'd rather get a PDA." So when I had some time to really test the PDA versus iPhone recently I was surprised by my end decision.
My needs were clear:
- Phone calls
- SMS
- Check my emails while away from the PC (Soon to be Mac...I can't wait!)
- Listen to some music
- A couple of games that stimulate the mind (My childhood favourite was Hangman)
When I went looking I had a preconceived notion that a PDA was my best option. One major factor beyond my control was coverage. Sadly where I am located only the big 'G' is reliable so off to the 'T Shop' I went.
When I explained to the sales assistant my needs, I started asking questions. Thankfully the person was knowledgeable and what he didn't know he got his manager to take over and explain. To my delight they actually had real working models of the top 2 recommendations, Blackberry Bold and Apple iPhone.
I was left to 'play' and play I did. I was able to compare the email functions, internet browsers, calendars, camera and other apps (applications). One thing that let me down on the Blackberry was screen size. It was too small to really feel like you were on the internet, and all that scrolling around made me dizzy. So in the end I chose an Apple iPhone.
I got it on 29 December and not a day has gone by without me using or adding new apps. Some of the apps I have added are:
Qantas - http://qantas.com/mobile
This is a quick way to access timetable information, lounge locations and airport services, but the feature set will grow in the future to include booking flights, selecting seating and online check-in.
Evernote - http://www.evernote.com
Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere.
Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/
By now most will know about this social networking site. Now you can access it anywhere you get a signal on your phone.
iTalk - http://italksync.com
More than just a voice recorder this smart little app allows you to capture anything from those important business deals to all the sounds around you.
Hangman - http://jamsoftonline.com/hangman-iphoneipod-touch
As previously mentioned this was my favourite mental stimulation game when I was a child. Single Player Mode is against the iPhone, in Two Player Mode one creates the word(s) and the other tries to guess. So much fun!
When your checking the above out, do a search for these freebies:
Ozweather
FourFree
Whoopie
Translator
EyeTricks
TicTac Touch
Google Earth
Flashlight
iHandy Level
AU Postcode
Let alone its quick access to Maps, YouTube, World Clock and iPod. (My only wish for the iPod app is that it have the Crossfade function like iTunes does.)
All round I absolutely love my iPhone and am soooo impressed by its functions. If anyone out there is considering buying new technology and would like to know more please feel free to get in touch.
